What’s happening in the classroom?

A week has passed since the start of the new school year, and the children have quickly integrated into the learning life of the Nursery. Children often come home excitedly and share their experiences of the day with family members, which makes many friends who have never been to Nursery curious: what is Huili Nursery really like?

 

Today we invited Ms. Jo Zhou and Ms. Kathryn Hastings from EY1&2 to reveal a mysterious corner of the classroom for us, and to share the wonderful learning opportunities which can be found there. 

 

 

初步感知周围环境中数学的有趣和有用

Preliminary perception of the interesting and useful mathematics in the surrounding environment

 

When building with blocks in the designated area, there are often conversations between children and between children and teachers, such as "Can you pass me that block?". The teacher encourages the child to provide more specific descriptions, saying "Can you tell me which shape you need? A square or a triangle?" or asking "How many do you need?". At the same time, by guiding young children to perceive and practise maths in daily life, we also support children to experience a sense of achievement when using maths to solve problems.

感知理解数、量和数量的关系

Perceive and understand the relationship between numbers, quantities, and amounts

 

If you observe the number models in the classroom carefully, you will find some interesting details. Each number model has a corresponding number of dots. When children discover this detail, they often share it with their peers, saying "Three dots!". In this way, numbers and quantities are linked through repeated surprises. Compared with mechanical repetition of "1, 2, 3", this kind of learning acquired through children's discovery and self-inductive summary is more vivid and profound.

感知形状与空间的关系

Perceive the relationship between shapes and space

 

A teacher supporting children to tidy up the building blocks often leads to some WOW moments:

 

  • Teacher: "Where should this building block be put ?"

  • Child: "In the place with the same shape" (The child points to the shape that the teacher had designed and drawn on the shelf in advance)

  • Teacher: "There are too many shapes here. Which shape should we put it in?"

 

The process of organising tidying up also becomes a shape matching treasure hunt, and children's understanding of basic shapes such as triangles, squares, rectangles, and circles is subtly reinforced during the process.
