The age range of 3-6 years old is a sensitive period for the development of children's motor skills. Appropriate physical activities play a positive role in promoting their growth and motor skill development. In Nursery, in addition to regular outdoor activities and indoor physical education classes, weekly swimming lessons are also an important part of the children's physical development.

As a full-body exercise, swimming is beneficial for the healthy growth of children. In the special aquatic environment, the movement between arms and legs is fully utilised, which is conducive to developing children's body coordination ability and promoting muscle development.

Unlike older pupils, the swimming sessions for young children focus on cultivating water awareness and integrating education with entertainment. Children are encouraged to overcome their fear of water and enjoy playing in the water, preparing them for further learning and practising swimming skills in the future.

The PE teaching team use a variety of water games such as underwater object retrieval, mini water polo, water relay, and story role-playing to help children become familiar with water and master basic water skills. These activities also promote the development of children's fine motor skills, positively affecting their hand flexibility and directional grasping. With the help of these interesting forms of activities, some children who were initially afraid of getting into the water were able to adapt to the pool and move and flip flexibly in the water after only two classes. Many children also find playing games in the water even more fun than on land! This helps children develop a good interest in sports unconsciously.

In addition to fun activities, the PE team also design targeted swimming skill courses based on the children's different levels, gradually progressing from play to formal swimming learning. We are proud to say that children in the EY3&4 are already brave enough to enter the larger, deeper pool to practise their swimming skills! We believe that through multi-sensory stimulation in the aquatic environment and continuous resistance training of muscles against water, we can help children develop their gross motor skills and improve their coordination between hands and legs. This can also enhance children's core trunk stability, shoulder joint flexibility, and lower limb support stability, improving their overall body balance perception.

Swimming is one of the only things we can teach children at school that might save their life. Confidence around water, alongside personal water safety skills, are incredibly valuable abilities that are so important to learn as early as possible. Hiba Academy Nantong is proud to be promoting these skills in our school’s youngest learners.
