Not Just Play - Kites are flying!

Life in the Nursery is always so exciting because children's minds are always bursting with various ideas. When children shared their holiday experiences, they started to have questions and thoughts from a photo of a windmill: besides windmills, what else can be blown by the wind? The children remembered that bubbles can be blown by the wind and that paper aeroplanes made by their older siblings can fly. Ms Kathryn brought a kite and the children said excitedly, "Kites! Kites can also fly! Let's make kites!

The children looked closely at the real kites and discussed the materials needed to make them. Kites float gently on the wind, meaning they are light – what kind of material is light?

  • Audrey said, "Paper is light! And the bag is also light! There are lots of patterns on the kite”.

  •  Sophie said, “I'm going to draw a rainbow”.

  •  Leo notices that the kite has a long, thin "tail”.

  •  Ian said, “and long strings!”

While carefully observing the characteristics of kites, the children collected the materials they needed for making kites. During the process, they also encountered some challenges: how can they firmly fix the "tail" on the kite? The teachers gave a small suggestion: maybe they can try double-sided tape? So, under the guidance of the teachers, the children explored the characteristics and usage of double-sided tape. Combining with the fine motor skills they had previously practised, such as tearing, cutting, and pasting, the children soon became proficient in using double-sided tape. This time, the small tail was quickly fixed!

After making the kites, the children couldn't wait to find a windy place to try them out. The outdoor area of the Nursery was a good choice, but the school football field seemed windier! They also invited older Nursery pupils to come and fly kites together. At first, the children couldn't judge their running direction based on the wind direction, so the kites couldn't fly high. They then turned to teamwork. While one person ran, the other person threw the kite up, but this method was not very effective, and the kite could only stay in the air for a while. The children didn't give up. Finally, after several attempts and reflections, they discovered the key point: flying the kite against the wind direction!
