Screen Time in the holidays

In today’s digital age, many of us enjoy using our phones, tablets, or laptops to work and relax. There are many undeniable benefits to technology, and here at Hiba we are always keen to develop and respond to these with our provision in the environment at school. That being said, excessive screen time can be harmful to children’s physical, cognitive and emotional development. As a result, we have shared some potential suggestions for how to reduce screen time over the summer holidays.

Studies have shown the children who spend long periods of time watching screens may have lower cognitive skills, especially in relation to problem solving and language acquisition. Real life experiences provide far greater levels of stimulation.

 

Spending time watching screens is usually a very sedentary activity. Being inactive can lead to a host of physical health-related issues, so getting up and about each day can help to combat these and result in positive moods due to the endorphins released during exercise.

 

Screen time is also linked to a negative impact on emotional development in young children. Spending time alone or with online friends reduces the capabilities to develop friendships, solve disagreements and regulate emotions.

What can we do?

Be a good role model: Take some time each day to show your child that you are actively stepping away from the screen. Read a book or magazine.

Set limits: If you are comfortable, agree as a family on the amount of time your child should be using screens for each day.

Involve your child: Sharing ‘why’, at an appropriate level, will help children to have a deeper understanding of the importance of monitoring screen time.

Get moving!

Physical activities such as swimming, cycling or playing in the park are all great ways to be active. Make paper kites together and fly them in the warm summer evenings.

Using clean junk from recent deliveries to make and create models based on your child’s interest. Find materials such as string, tape and glue around your home and develop imaginative play opportunities using your homemade creations.

Quieter, calming activities include drawing, colouring and listening to music.

Spend quality time!

Explore a range of board or card games together. Our favourites at Hiba Academy Nantong include ‘Go Fish’ and Giant Jenga.

Have a picnic!

It can be snack, breakfast, lunch or dinner. Take a blanket or towel and enjoy sharing delicious treats together out and about in your local community.
