Recently the younger children have been interested in weaving after reading 'Sissi's Grocery Shop', in which Sissy weaves many popular products through her imagination and creativity! So, the children wanted to try their hand at weaving themselves!
Sisi's Grocery Shop by Xu Zheng
The teacher immediately prepared the appropriate materials for the children. Given children's current motor skill development, standard knitting techniques are not for them. We have created weaving opportunities that are more appropriate to the child's cognitive and motor development stages.
Simple techniques are easy to master, and the faster display of weaving is more conducive to children to build a sense of achievement and confidence! In terms of motor development.
We need to find tools that are easy to control but that are challenging to work with. This allows children to experience the joy of being in control, and also helps them develop fine motor, hand-eye co-ordination.
Finally, we chose children's needles, silk threads and rattan baskets as the materials. The children's needle thickness moderate with an eye that is easy for children to thread independently, and the colour of the silk thread will arouse a child's interest. The wicker basket has many small holes which make it easy for the needle and thread to pass through and it does not limit the children's creating skills. They can put the needle and thread through any hole they want. And best of all you can see the results immediately!
At the beginning of the weaving activity, the teacher intentionally guided the children to sew up and down in a straight line to help them quickly master the flat stitch technique. As the children became more skilled, they began to use their imagination and creativity: "Instead of weaving up and down, I can try weaving left and right!", "I want to try weaving on something other than a rattan basket, the fork looks good!".
Through the weaving activities, the children are constantly exploring and discovering patterns, recognising them, and creating them in their own work. In the process of handling tools, their concentration and resilience are gradually improving, their minds are becoming more active, their little hands more flexible and their movements more co-ordinated.
Our teachers also use a variety of guidance methods according to the physical and psychological characteristics of the children, so that the children can use their own initiative and motivation and to engage happily in weaving activities, thus stimulating the desire to create.
