At Hiba Academy Nantong, various realistic scenarios provide children with rich learning and development opportunities, allowing them to explore and learn in various real-life environments. While exploring the domestic role play opportunities, the children in EY1&2 showed a strong interest in preparing and serving food. Responding to this interest, our teachers provided real life opportunities to support and develop a range of skills – it was decided, let’s make sweet pear soup!
我们的准备工作
Preparation work
Before starting the process, our pupils gathered to discuss what they know about cooking so far.
“We need to wash our hands!” said Audrey.
“Cut, we need to cut the vegetables,” said Mo.
“We need to add water into the soup,” said Aaron.
Everyone's ideas came together to create a plan!

The children took responsibility for every aspect of the process, with support and safety reminders from their teachers. The materials were collected: a knife, cutting board, electric pot, and a huge pear! After washing the pear, it was time for the challenging cutting process. After practising with the knife, the children took turns working out how to cut the pear.
Aaron tried stabbing the point of the knife into the pear.
Audrey tried pushing with all of her strength.
Ian tried rocking the knife back and forth.
Sophie began sawing the knife and cut a line through the fruit!
As she succeeded, others learnt from her experience and started sawing and pressing the knife down to cut smaller and smaller pieces of pear.
“We need to add water!” said Aaron. Aaron helped pour the water in and the other friends began adding the pear. Soon, we had a delicious pot of bubbling pear soup!
The children carefully observed the appearance of the pear soup with their eyes, gently sniffing its fragrance with their noses, and savouring its sweetness with their mouths. Everyone drank a full cup of pear soup!
At Hiba Nursery, the life-oriented curriculum frees children from simply accepting and imitating, allowing them to become active learners. With careful guidance from teachers, they perceive the surrounding facilities, phenomena, and events in real-life situations. Through observation, communication, experimentation, and experience, they constantly reflect and enrich their understanding and experience of the surrounding world, enhancing their life skills. We hope to purposefully construct the curriculum to increase children's interest and enthusiasm in Nursery, encouraging them to actively use their senses to interact with the environment and gain more comprehensive and rich direct experiences.
