Sensory perception is the first gateway for young children to explore the world. When children fully utilise their senses to perceive the things around them, they collect and convey different information. This allows children to gain cognitive experience and understand the world. During this period, children's unique sensory creations can bring more diversity, freedom, and emotional development, and can provide broader space and opportunities for their personality growth and emotional expression.

Recently, in the sensory creation activities of EY2, the children and teachers worked together to create rhythmic art by connecting music and painting. The children imagined scenes and freely moved to the music, while their bodies became the paintbrush. The beautiful notes merged with the children's imagination and thinking, leaving colorful and concrete impressions on the white paper.

Animal Carnival - Aquarium   Saint Saens 02:37

Saint Saens' "Animal Carnival - Aquarium" mainly presents the theme of fish circling and changing light at the bottom through music. And we set it as the first background music . We designed a "circling swim" as the main movement, and the "changing light” is represented by a colour change. Before we begin our painting, we examine the different elements that go into it first.

According to the plot of the picture book "The Strange Sounds of the Bottom of the Sea", we simulated divers diving into the bottom of the sea to find different marine life. We used our hands to imitate different sea creatures and asked the children to try to make various marks in the sand table.

  • Milo's turtle slowly left a circle on the sea floor.

  • Audrey's crab left parallel lines on the bottom, and she explains that’s how crab’s move.

  • Rachel's hand turned into an Angel Fish and swam quickly across the bottom, leaving a wavy zigzag line.

The setting of "Underwater World" helps children put themselves in a situation to experience and understand the music of Aquarium. The specific background setting inspires children's existing cognition, and they continue to refine and enrich our story background through discussion and sharing.

  • Milo said "There are big fish and small fish at the bottom of the sea."

  • Lexi said "There are still water plants in the sea!"

  • Rachel said "Some fish in the sea swim fast!"

Since different fish swim in different ways, what does their sea look like? We gave the children different fish characters to move through the ocean. Then, we listened to the Aquarium for the first time, and asked the children to choose the colour for their fish, and then follow the music to leave traces and draw a sea.

As the music progresses, the teacher and children gradually advance the plot of the story together.

The children drew their fish characters in this ocean, imagining and imitating them playing, sleeping, splashing water, blowing bubbles in their respective habitats or other life scenes. The story plot was constantly pushed forward by the big hand of imagination.

From the bottom of the sea appeared a ship, a big one. Our fish have never seen a ship before. How will they react?

  • Milo said "I am a brave little fish. Let's go and see!"

  • Lexi said "There must be a big shark living in there! Sharks are afraid of tickling!"

So, we continue the story according to the child's idea. We talked about what animals are on the bottom of the sea that can help us look at shipwrecks. The largest whale, the tickling octopus, the fast angel fish, the hard shell of the crab... We went back and forth several times, depending on the role of the children. The children change into different animals each time they probe. And use their limbs to mimic the way the animals walk, run in fear, and show excitement.

After exploring the three elements, we try to move in a larger space and record our movements with paint.

This time, the children took off their shoes and socks. As small fish of different colours, they live and play on the bottom of the sea...

Until a black hole came along...

Children's creations are always full of wonders! They are innocent and lovely, full of creativity, and their emotions are sincere, lively, delicate, and passionate. In Huili Nursery Nantong, our teachers provide exciting opportunities to develop concrete thinking when they are still exploring the world. We create more opportunities for children to appreciate and explore independently, help them touch and experience the world first-hand, and better perceive and understand the world, express themselves, and develop \more comprehensively.
